Learning About Nutrition with Standard Deviants Accelerate
Standard Deviants Accelerate offers a wide range of classes for elementary to high school students from Arithmetic to AP Chemistry. Since we are all set in our core subjects, we reviewed the Nutrition course that is offered through Standard Deviants Accelerate. Before being a part of this review, I had not heard about these online self-paced supplemental courses.
About Standard Deviants Accelerate :
The online program offersa teacher account which allows the educator to place students in the course in which they have access. I have access to all courses for one year as a part of this review. Since I have two daughters, I enrolled both girls in my Nutrition class. Once enrolling both girls in my course, they both had access to their own account. Each student account must have its own email address. The teacher account has an administrative tool box where students' grades can be found, the written responses to short answer questions are also deposited here, and also messages from the students.
About the Nutrition course:
The Nutrition course has eight units plus a subject review section. The units include:
- Intro to Nutrition
- What Your Body Does With Food
- Food Spectrum
- Micronutrients
- Preventing Nutritional Disorders
- Eating in Context
- Where Does Your Food Come From?
- The Savvy Eater
Each unit is broken into three to five smaller components. The lessons within each unit follows the same format. The information is presented in video format. The transcript is also available for those who would like to read along or need it as a visual for later use. A list of essential vocabulary words are provided along with the definitions for each word. There is a diagram which is normally in the form a matching activity such as placing words onto the correct part of the diagram. Each lesson also has a quiz with five multiple choice questions followed by one written answer question which shows up in the teacher's drop box to be graded.
What did we think about Standard Deviants Accelerate?
Both of the girls were set up with her own account and worked independently on the website. They each used the website several times per week. The videos are engaging. The speakers are youthful and energetic. Both of the girls enjoyed the videos, but my oldest daughter also took advantage of the transcript and read it along with watching the videos. I often caught the video by watching in the background as one of the girls was watching it although I am able to access the videos from my teacher account.
I appreciate this program because both of the girls have made mention to the information they have learned from SDA in our everyday life particularly when making food choices. Since they were already label readers, the information they are learning from SDA provides them with more understanding of what they are reading on the packages.
Overall, we all like the Nutrition course. This is the first time the girls have studied nutrition in depth. The information in the course is not skimping and has taught them more than I imagined it would. I like that the information is presented in video form because many of the words would be hard to pronounce for my youngest learner if she attempted to read it alone. The course is suggested for sixth grade and above. Although the girls have yet to complete any written answers, I have come to enjoy the discussions the course has stirred up in our home about being healthy and understanding what we are putting into our bodies.
